If there is a default outdoor rug size, this is it. A 3x5 is long enough to do real work and small enough to go almost anywhere, which is why it tends to be the size people buy first.

Where a 3x5 earns its place

  • The front door. The standard layering size — wider than a single door, so it frames the entry rather than sitting inside it. Put a coir scraper mat on top at the threshold.
  • A deck landing or the top of a flight of steps.
  • In front of a bench, glider or porch swing, where you want the length but not the depth.
  • A narrow balcony, run across the depth so the pattern pushes the side walls apart.
  • A galley-shaped side return, where a squarer rug would look wrong.

What it is not

A seating-area rug. Three feet of depth will not take the front legs of chairs on two sides at once, so a 3x5 sits beside furniture rather than under it. If you want a sofa and chairs tied together, you want the 4x6 or the 5x7.

Pattern at this size

Small and medium patterns hold their shape here; very large-scale checks and blocks get cropped and read as fragments. Stripes are the safest choice at 3x5, because the proportions suit them — the shape is close to a runner, and a runner has wanted stripes for about two hundred years.

Material

Soft polyester chenille, short dense nap, no-skid backing, overlocked edges. Around 2mm thick, so it clears a storm door swing. Water-resistant, mildew-resistant, fade-resistant and quick-drying. Spot clean only. Tolerance around 3.5″.
