Trellis is the one pattern that is already outside before you bring it there. It is the shape of a garden lattice, a wire fence, a vine frame and the diamonds in a Moroccan weave — so a trellis rug tends to look like it belongs on a terrace, where a floral or an abstract has to earn its place.

What the diamond does to a space

A diamond is a square rotated forty-five degrees, and that rotation is the useful part. The pattern does not line up with decking boards or paving joints, so the rug stops reading as flooring that failed to match and starts reading as its own object, placed deliberately on top.

That makes it the easy choice in awkward corners, on decks that are not quite square, and anywhere the paving runs at an angle to the seating.

Open or closed

An open trellis — thin outline diamonds on a plain ground — behaves like texture and stays quiet. It is close to a neutral and it suits a space where the furniture is already patterned.

Closed diamonds, filled and repeating edge to edge, are a strong graphic and will carry a plain terrace on their own.
