Solid color outdoor rugs

A plain rug is the right answer more often than the internet suggests. If the furniture is patterned, the cushions are already doing something, or the planting is loose and abundant, a pattern underfoot is one voice too many. A solid ground gives the space a floor instead of another feature.

What outdoor rugs are made of, and why it matters more on a plain one

On a patterned rug the material is more or less invisible — you look at the design. On a plain rug the surface is the design, so what it is made of decides whether it looks like a considered choice or like a mat.

Most outdoor rugs sold today are flat-woven polypropylene: plastic straw, hard-wearing, and unpleasant to stand on. Ours are polyester chenille with a short, dense nap around 2mm thick. Low-pile and flat rather than thick, but genuinely soft underfoot — which is the whole argument for a plain rug, because softness is the only thing a plain rug has to offer other than color.

The honest trade

Plain shows more. A pattern hides leaf litter, pollen and dried rain marks; a solid ground shows all three, and the paler the ground, the more it shows.

So choose the tone for the conditions rather than for the swatch. Charcoal, navy and deep green stay presentable on an exposed deck. Cream and sand belong under a porch roof or on a swept, covered terrace.

Making a plain rug interesting

Let the shape do it. A solid rug placed generously, with the front legs of the furniture on it and an even margin of paving showing all round, looks intentional. The same rug pushed into a corner looks like a remnant.
