Black outdoor rugs: the most graphic thing you can put on the ground

Black is the shortest route to making an outdoor space look deliberate. It has no undertone to clash with, it frames whatever furniture stands on it, and against pale paving or a white-painted wall it does what nothing else does — it draws a hard line and makes the arrangement look designed.

A black ground shows less than any other color in the range. Leaf litter, pollen, dried rain marks and the residue of a summer outdoors all disappear into it. If the rug lives under trees or gets heavy use, this is the palette that stays presentable longest.

One honest caveat about full sun

A dark rug absorbs heat. On a south-facing terrace in July, a black rug will be warmer underfoot in the afternoon than a pale one on the same paving. That is not a fault, but it is worth knowing if the whole point of buying a soft chenille rug was to walk on it barefoot at four o'clock. In full, all-day sun, a neutral ground stays cooler. On a covered porch, a shaded courtyard or a north-facing deck, black has no downside at all.

Plain or patterned

A solid black rug is the strongest statement and the least forgiving of a space that is not already tidy — it will make everything around it look like a decision, including the things you had not decided. A black ground with a pattern on it gives you the same anchor with more tolerance. Black and white is the easiest version of that.
