Front door outdoor rugs, and how to layer one properly

An entryway rug does two jobs that pull in opposite directions. It has to look like something — it is the first thing anyone sees — and it has to deal with whatever people bring in on their shoes. One rug rarely does both well, which is why layering has become the standard answer.

How to layer a rug at the front door

Put the patterned rug down first, running along the door or centered on it, and set a plain coir doormat on top of it directly in front of the threshold. The rug supplies the color and the width; the coir does the scraping. When the coir wears out you replace a cheap mat rather than the whole arrangement.

Be straight with yourself about which layer you are buying here. Ours is a soft chenille rug, not a bristle scraper. It looks considerably better than a coir mat and it is far more comfortable underfoot, but it will not take mud off a boot. If your door opens straight onto a garden path, you want both.

Sizing to a door

  • 36″ × 60″ — the standard layering size. Wider than the door, so the rug frames the entry rather than sitting inside it.
  • 48″ × 72″ — a double door, or a landing with room either side.
  • 24″ × 36″ — a standalone mat where there is no room to layer.

Whichever you pick, the rug wants to be wider than the door frame. A rug narrower than the door makes the entrance look pinched.

Door clearance

A short, dense 2mm nap clears a standard inward or outward swing without catching. Storm doors sit lowest — measure the gap once before ordering if yours is tight.
