Blue outdoor rugs: sky, water, and everything you cannot plant

Blue is the one color that turns up outdoors without anyone putting it there. It is the sky and it is water, and a blue rug borrows both. That is why it reads as natural in a garden even though almost nothing in a garden is blue.

Which blue

  • Navy and indigo — the practical end. Dark grounds show marks least, which makes them the sensible choice for an uncovered deck or a terrace under trees. See the navy collection.
  • Mid and cobalt blues — the graphic end. Strong enough to carry a plain concrete slab on their own, and the natural home of a cabana stripe.
  • Soft, sun-bleached blues — the coastal end. They read as weathered rather than new and sit easily with teak, rope and white paint.

Where blue works less well

Blue is a cool color, and cool colors amplify whatever light a space already has. On a bright, sun-baked terrace that is exactly what you want — it makes the place feel cooler than it is. On a shaded north-facing courtyard it can tip the whole space towards cold, and a warm ground in terracotta or rust will do more for you.

Pairing

Blue and white is the most reliable combination outdoors and needs no thought at all. Blue with natural wood is the next easiest. Blue against green planting holds up provided the blue has some depth to it — very pale blue next to strong summer foliage tends to look washed out rather than restful.
