Red is the boldest thing you can put underfoot outdoors, and it is the one color that rewards being placed thoughtfully rather than simply liked.

Where red belongs

On hard landscaping. Red comes into its own against brick, terracotta paving, warm stone and natural wood — materials that already share something with it. A red rug on a brick terrace looks inevitable. The same rug on grey concrete looks like it arrived by accident.

It is also the right call for a space you want to feel warm rather than airy: a courtyard, a covered porch used in the evening, a fire-pit corner used into the fall.

Where it fights

Directly against a green border. Red and green sit opposite each other on the color wheel, which in a paint chart reads as striking and in a garden reads as restless — the two colors vibrate against each other and neither settles. If your seating looks straight out onto strong summer planting, a terracotta or rust is the calmer version of the same warmth, and it does not pick that fight.

Which red

Deeper reds — brick, oxblood, barn red — behave far better outdoors than bright pillar-box tones, and they hide use better too. In a pattern, red against cream or white reads as folk and classic; red against navy reads nautical; red against black reads graphic and modern.
