4x6 outdoor rugs (48″ × 72″)

The 4x6 is the size that fits when a 5x7 is too much rug and a 3x5 disappears. It sits in the middle of our range and, on most patios and decks, it is the one that asks for no compromise in either direction.

Where it works

  • A bistro set. Small table, two chairs, both pulled out — a 4x6 holds all of it.
  • A double front door. Wide enough to frame both leaves, which a 3x5 is not.
  • A two-seater with the front legs on and a low table in front.
  • A covered porch with a pair of rockers.
  • A grill or outdoor kitchen run, where you want something underfoot but not a full seating rug.

How to know it is the right one

Measure the footprint of the furniture, then add about a foot on the sides people walk in from. If that comes out under six feet on the long edge, the 4x6 is your size. If it comes out over, go up rather than trying to make this one work — a rug that is slightly too small is far more visible than one that is slightly too big.

Balconies are the exception. On a narrow balcony a 4x6 can run the full depth and leave nothing visible around it, which makes the space feel smaller rather than larger. There, a 3x5 usually looks better.

Soft polyester chenille with a short, dense nap — low-pile and flat, comfortable barefoot, on a no-skid polyester backing that grips decking, concrete and pavers. No rug pad needed. Overlocked edges. Water-resistant, mildew-resistant, fade-resistant and quick-drying. Spot clean only. Size tolerance around 3.5″.
