Rugs for wood and composite decking. The chenille pile is soft on bare feet where bare boards are splintery or scorching, and it dries quickly enough that moisture doesn't sit trapped for days.

One rule for decks: lift the rug and stand it on edge after heavy rain so both the rug and the boards underneath dry out. Do that and a rug on a deck is completely fine.

Outdoor rugs for a deck, and the question everyone asks first

Before anything about pattern or size: no, an outdoor rug will not ruin your deck. What ruins a deck is water with nowhere to go, and a rug only causes that if you leave it lying flat and soaked for weeks at a time.

Wood and composite behave differently. Wood needs air to dry out, so a rug left down through a wet fortnight can hold damp against the boards and mark the finish. Composite and Trex do not rot, but water still sits between the backing and the board, and that is where the grime line comes from. The fix is the same for both: after heavy rain, lift the rug and stand it on edge for an hour. More on rugs and wood decks here.

Backing and grip

Deck boards have a grain and a gap, which is the surface most rugs slide on. Ours have a no-skid polyester backing that grips the board rather than riding over it, so there is no rug pad to buy.

Sizing to a deck

The rule is the same as anywhere: get the front legs of every chair onto the rug. Decks add one extra consideration, which is the direction of the boards.

  • Stripes running across the boards break up the corridor effect and make a narrow deck read wider.
  • Stripes running with the boards reinforce the length — useful on a deep deck, unhelpful on a long thin one.
  • Diagonals and non-linear patterns ignore the boards entirely, which is the easiest option when the deck is an awkward shape.

Material and care

Soft polyester chenille with a short, dense nap — low-pile and flat rather than thick, and comfortable barefoot, which is not something you can say about a flat plastic mat. Water-resistant, mildew-resistant, fade-resistant and quick-drying. Spot clean only; do not hose or pressure wash.
