RV and camping rugs for the campsite pad

A campsite pad is gravel, dirt or cracked asphalt, and it is the single biggest reason an RV site feels like a parking space rather than somewhere to sit. A rug under the awning changes that in about thirty seconds, which is the whole appeal.

What makes a good camper rug

Three things, and they are not the ones most listings lead with.

  • It has to dry fast. You break camp when you break camp, not when the weather cooperates. Polyester chenille holds very little water and the short nap dries quickly in open air, so a rug that got rained on at seven can go in the bay by nine.
  • It has to pack small. Ours run about 2mm — low-pile and flat rather than thick, so they fold down instead of rolling into a log that eats a whole storage bay.
  • It has to be worth standing on barefoot. The woven plastic mats sold for campsites are hard-wearing and unpleasant. This is a soft chenille rug. That is the trade you are making.

Where it works less well

Sharp gravel wears the backing faster than a deck or a patio does. If your usual pad is coarse crushed stone rather than pea gravel or dirt, expect a shorter life than the same rug would have at home. And ours is not reversible — there is a no-skid polyester backing, so it lies one way up.
